King News 11th September – The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has urged all parties to the Revitalized Peace Agreement in South Sudan to continue engaging in dialogue to address the pending tasks within the agreement. This call was made in an effort to accelerate progress toward peace and stability in the country.
Guang Cong, Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General of UNMISS, reiterated this appeal at the National Constitutional Review Commission (NCRC) Consultative Workshop on Federalism and Power Sharing. He stressed the importance of speeding up efforts to resolve outstanding issues in order to ensure a successful and peaceful transition for South Sudan.
He reiterated UNMISS’s commitment to support the government of South Sudan in implementing the Revitalized Peace Agreement, particularly in the constitutional-making process.
Cong affirmed UNMISS’s dedication to collaborating closely with the South Sudanese government to expedite the remaining crucial tasks related to the constitution-making process.
“UNMISS is committed to supporting the government and the people of South Sudan in implementing the revitalized peace agreement, including the crucial task of constitution-making,” Cong said.
He added, “In line with our commitments to build the capacity of NCRC, we are pleased to support the request by NCRC, co-hosting with Max Planck Foundation this workshop, focusing on essential aspects of federalism, such as power sharing.”
He urged the NCRC members to carry out their responsibility to shape South Sudan’s future.
“The work you do today will leave a lasting impact on future generations, fostering the peace and harmony for years to come. We hope this workshop will equip you with the knowledge and tools necessary to effectively support the constitution making process and other key mission-building efforts,” he stated.
He stated that the goal of UNMISS is to support all parties to the accords in guaranteeing the significant and secure involvement of a wide range of stakeholders in the peace process and continuing peace-building initiatives.
“UNMISS stands ready to offer continued support and technical assistance to South Sudanese institutions as you work towards completing your democratic transition, ensuring the inclusion of women, youth, persons with disability, and other marginalized groups,” he stressed.
Cong further pointed out, “UNMISS’s mandate is designed to promote a multi-year strategic vision that supports South Sudan’s journey towards self-reliance and inclusive and accountable governance.”
