On Friday, the Mayor of Yambio Municipality, John Singira, has reaffirmed his commitment to reclaiming public land unlawfully occupied within the municipality. This renewed effort follows growing concerns over land grabbing and the unauthorized sale of community spaces meant for public development.
In a press statement, Mayor Singira outlined his strategy to restore these vital areas to their original purpose, emphasizing their importance in fostering community growth and development.
Since assuming office over two years ago, the mayor initially issued a six-month ultimatum to illegal occupants, urging them to vacate the properties voluntarily.
“But this year, I want to assure everyone who is in open space within Yambio municipality to leave that open space because the open space is for the place where we, the government, can have program and we can help the community. I was surprised to see that the open spaces it was occupied by individual people. I issued the order that within six months, someone who is in an open space must evacuate in that open space.” Singira stated
According to Singira, the unlawful occupation and sale of public land in Yambio has been a persistent issue. The mayor highlighted that over time, individuals have either occupied these spaces without authorization or have unlawfully sold them, further complicating the municipality’s ability to address urgent public needs.
The sale and occupation of public land have sparked outrage among local residents, who have voiced their frustration with the growing problem.
Singira said, the renewed eviction move is aimed at curbing these illegal activities and ensuring that the land is returned to its intended use. He has vowed to take swift action to enforce the earlier directive, with plans to work closely with local law enforcement and land authorities to ensure that any illegal structures or encroachments are removed.
