In a rare appearance on European soil, Sudanese leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan arrived in Seville, Spain, on Sunday to take part in a high-level international development summit.
Invited by the United Nations and the Spanish government, Burhan is set to speak today [Monday] about the developmental setbacks caused by Sudan’s ongoing conflict with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), according to the Sudanese embassy in Madrid.
The summit, held at the Sevilla Exhibition and Conference Centre from June 30 to July 3, brings together representatives from over 120 nations to tackle pressing global issues such as achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, debt restructuring, and reforming international financial systems.
This marks the first major U.N. conference on development financing since the 2015 gathering in Addis Ababa.
Sponsored by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the event emphasizes the importance of rural and agricultural investment as a pathway to reducing poverty and hunger.
The Sudanese military leader is also expected to engage in diplomatic meetings, including talks with a European Union envoy, reinforcing Sudan’s appeal for greater international collaboration and support.
