The 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted jointly by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, has banned three countries for political considerations, including Russia, Congo, and Pakistan, according to Sports Tak.
Following this decision, neither the men’s nor women’s teams can compete in the World Cup or European Championships. Not only this but domestic clubs are also barred from UEFA competitions.
Gianni Infantino, FIFA’s President, posted on his X-Platform on Friday, stating that “Talks are going on for peace in Ukraine. I hope that we can soon move to the next page and bring Russia back as well in the football landscape because this would mean everything is solved.”
According to the report, Pakistan’s suspension stems from administrative failures, Russia remains banned due to geopolitical sanctions, and Congo is excluded for third-party interference in its football federation.
Russia is now banned from competing in FIFA-sanctioned events following its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
In consultation with the Confederation of African Football (CAF), FIFA halted Congo’s participation until specific conditions are met. It includes ceasing unauthorized financial changes and regaining control of their headquarters. Congo sits at the bottom of Group E in CAF qualifiers.
The number of eligible teams will be increased from 32 to 48 for the 2026 edition.
