At least more than 200 households have been forced to flee their homes following severe flooding in Pochalla County, Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA), according to local authorities.
Speaking to King Media on Tuesday, GPAA’s Information Minister, Jacob Werchum Juok, noted that persistent heavy rains over recent weeks have inundated villages, destroyed crops, and displaced families to higher ground.
“Last week, flooding struck Pochalla South, and it has now spread to Pochalla North, forcing many people to relocate,” Juok explained.
He lamented the lack of humanitarian assessments by either national or international agencies, warning that the situation is rapidly deteriorating.
“So far, more than 200 households are displaced, with urgent needs for food, shelter, and medical care,” he said.
According to Juok, the most affected communities are those along the riverbanks, where rising waters have cut off access routes, making it harder to deliver aid.
Vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and nursing mothers are particularly at risk.
He appealed to the national government, aid organizations, and other well-wishers to act swiftly.
“We urgently call on authorities and humanitarian partners to provide temporary shelters and emergency supplies. Without immediate support, our people will face serious suffering,” he stressed.
Flooding has become a recurring challenge in GPAA, where seasonal rains frequently overwhelm fragile infrastructure.
Humanitarian groups have long cautioned that the convergence of flooding, food shortages, and communal conflict is deepening the vulnerability of residents in the region.
