South Sudan’s President, Salva Kiir, urged the SSPDF and other forces to stop engaging in politics, emphasizing professionalism and ethical conduct. Speaking at the handover ceremony in Bilpam, Juba, where Gen. Santino Deng Wol transferred command to Gen. Paul Nang Majok, Kiir stressed that avoiding politics is essential for building public trust and safeguarding the nation’s territorial integrity.
“We warn SSPDF and other regular forces against involvement in politics, but rather to concentrate on their transformation process into conventional institutions,” Kiir said.
He added, “We will not allow anybody in uniforms to engage in politics because you have a different role to play in the country. To members of the military and other organized forces, from today onward, you must refrain from engaging in dirty politics.”
The head of state underscored the SSPDF’s critical role in maintaining peace and order, particularly by dismantling illegal checkpoints along major routes to allow for the unhindered movement of goods and services throughout the country.
General Paul Nang Majok, in his acceptance speech, pledged unwavering commitment to the President’s directives. He outlined his vision to reorganize and modernize the armed forces, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing soldiers’ welfare. Additionally, he highlighted plans to equip the military with advanced tools and technologies to enhance their operational effectiveness. However, Nang’s leadership promised to introduce new ideas and perspectives, ensuring the nation’s military force continues to evolve and grow stronger, as the SSPDF, led by former CDF Gen. Santino, has been instrumental in bringing peace and stability back to South Sudan.
