President Salva Kiir Mayardit has urged newly sworn-in leaders of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) to make peace and unity their top priorities in serving the people of South Sudan.
Addressing the officials during their swearing-in ceremony in Juba on Thursday, President Kiir welcomed the new deputies, emphasizing that they are stepping into roles once held by the party’s founding members.
He called on the appointees to commit themselves to national progress, encouraging them to lead not along ethnic or individual lines, but with a unified vision for the country.
“My fellow South Sudanese, the SPLM must remain strong, must remain united, must remain focused. We are not in competition with each other. We are in service to the people. The future of our country depends on you. Be united and work for peace, for justice, and for the betterment of all our people. Let us move forward, not as individuals, not as tribes, but as one nation, under one flag, with one future,” Kiir stated.
The ceremony saw the swearing-in of key leaders including Dr. Benjamin Bol Mel as first Deputy Chairman, Mary Apai as Second Deputy Chairperson, and Simon Kun Pouch as third Deputy Chairman.
Kiir acknowledged the challenges of leadership transition, noting that such changes can be divisive but emphasizing the importance of unity.
“But I ask you all to not let this moment divide us. Let’s unite. The SPLM must remain strong,” he urged.
He further cautioned the new appointees that their positions are a responsibility, not a reward.
“Your appointment is not a reward; it is a responsibility. You have been chosen to serve, not to rule. The SPLM is a ruling party and people. We are facing economic challenges, yes, but we are not helpless. We are strong people,” he stressed.
The ceremony drew attendance from top government officials, including senior SPLM members, National Liberation Council (NLC) representatives, and political bureau leaders from both the legislative and executive arms of government.
