On Wednesday, the special court adjourned the high-profile treason case against First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar and seven co-accused after a sudden power outage interrupted the session, leaving judges and observers in the courtroom sweltering in the heat.

Justice Stephen Simon announced the adjournment, noting that proceedings could not continue without electricity.

The 20th session had been scheduled for the cross-examination of lead investigator Maj. Gen. Basilio Thomas Wani.

Earlier in the week, prosecutors had requested witness protection measures and the appointment of a court interpreter to ensure a fair hearing.

Dr. Machar and his co-accused, Puot Kang Chuol, Mam Pal Dhuor, Gatwech Lam Puoch, Lt. Gen. Gabriel Duop Lam, Kamilo Gatmai Kel, Mading Yak Riek, and Dominic Gatgok Riek, face serious charges including treason, crimes against humanity, mass murder, terrorism, and destruction of property.

The court is set to resume proceedings on Friday, 24 November 2025, as judges prepare to continue scrutinizing the lead investigator’s findings.
