The Governor of Darfur State and leader of the Sudan Liberation Army Movement (SLAM), Minni Arko Minawi, appealed to the international community to take into account the heinous crimes carried out by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Al-Gezira State.
In a statement on his X platform on Sunday, Minawi called for immediate action from the African Union, the United Nations, the Arab League, the European Union, and African leaders to stop the RSF’s destruction.
He added, “Do you not see these massacres carried out by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia? Are you waiting for more testimonies than this?”
He said the atrocities committed by the rebel RSF in Eastern Al-Gezira are now part of its dark past, stressing the need for urgent action on what’s occurring in Sudan.
Minawi bemoaned that the transgressions are a great mess that not just violates humanity but the right to life in society. He allegedly accused the Taggadum Alliance, led by former Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok, of colluding with the RSF Militia despite the crimes it had perpetrated.
On October 24, 2024, the Rapid Support Forces attacked Zurqa, a community 10 kilometers from Tambul, and killing eight people. In a separate incident in Maknun, Safita al-Ghunomab, 27 people—including a woman—were slain. In the village of Deim Elias, two more people were killed, while 12 more died in Tambul, bringing the total death toll to 49.
Humanitarian crisis
The ensuing incident, which targeted civilians, has led to additional displacement and a humanitarian catastrophe.
According to media reports, 24 villages—including al-Sharafa al-Bahr, Dalut al-Bahr, al-Habika al-Naqr, Bant, al-Amara Ali, Ad al-Khadr, Wad al-Hussein East, Wad al-Hussein West, Wad al-Humaim, al-Abudab, al-Aziaba, al-Suqia, al-Junayd al-Hilla, al-Hashishab, al-Sayal, and the five villages that make up Kariyat have been forced to evacuate their homes due to the attacks.
The displaced population is in a terrible humanitarian condition. Many people struggle with acute food shortages and lack essential supplies, particularly flour. There is a severe cash scarcity and widespread individual fund loss at displacement areas as a result of RSF looting at the beginning of the attacks.
The conflict in Sudan persists despite internal, regional, and local peace initiatives, with the RSF and the Sudanese army battling it out to determine which side will ultimately win.
