The Central Equatoria State Government, in collaboration with the National Ministry of Energy and Dams, held an important meeting to discuss the expansion of electricity in Juba and Yei.
Speaking after the meeting, Paulino Lukudu, the Deputy Governor of Central Equatoria State, underscored the need for effective coordination between the National Government and state ministries. He specifically pointed out the issue of electric poles being installed too close to buildings, which he said raised serious safety concerns.
“Many of these poles are dangerously close to buildings, which poses risks to both infrastructure and residents,” said Lukudu. He also emphasized that Juba Electricity Distribution Company (JEDCO) would manage the distribution, urging the implementation of fair electricity pricing in Yei. “We must ensure that the tariffs in Yei remain affordable, unlike the high charges in Juba, to ensure equitable access for all residents,” he added.
The Mayor of Juba City Council, as well as the Commissioner of Juba, both expressed a strong need to connect markets within Juba to the electricity grid to foster local business growth. The Mayor said, “Integrating markets into the electricity network will significantly boost economic activity and improve the living standards of our people.”
Hon. Lam Tungwar, Undersecretary of the National Ministry of Energy and Dams, elaborated on the project’s scope. “This expansion is not just about providing power, but also about improving security and supporting local businesses. We also plan to extend this initiative to Yei,” Tungwar announced. He emphasized that this expansion would benefit both commercial and residential areas, contributing to overall development.
Hon. Fred Laku Raymond, State Minister of Housing, Land, and Public Utilities, echoed the importance of urban planning in the process. “Our ministry is fully committed to working hand in hand with the National Government to ensure that electricity distribution is done safely and efficiently,” Raymond stated. “Proper town planning is essential to prevent issues in the future and to ensure that all communities benefit from this crucial service.”
