The Norwegian Embassy in Juba has committed $3.6 million to UNFPA for Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) initiatives in South Sudan, focusing on combating obstetric fistula, a preventable condition affecting women and girls. Ambassador Roar Haugsdal emphasized the need to address the backlog of 60,000 cases, with fewer than 1,000 treated so far

“This additional funding will be a lifeline for countless women and girls, enabling them to regain their health, dignity, and independence,” Amb. Haugsdal said.

He emphasized the importance of the initiative, noting that, “Through this additional funding, we support the acceleration of efforts to ensure that women receive care with dignity to eliminate obstetric fistula in South Sudan.”

According to Haugsdal, sexual and reproductive health and rights are essential components of Norway’s global development priorities.

“This funding is part of Norway’s broader strategy, which allocates Norwegian Kroner 9.6 billion (approximately 858 million USD) toward global SRHR initiatives for the 2020-2025 period, underscoring the country’s long-standing dedication to these critical issues,” he stressed.

Norway’s support for UNFPA in South Sudan includes obstetric fistula treatment, prevention of child marriage and teen pregnancy, and improved contraceptive access. Reviving the National Taskforce on Fistula Management aligns with the Women, Peace, and Security agenda, aiming to empower survivors and promote sustainable development.
