More than 100 firearms have been voluntarily surrendered by armed youth in Mankien Payam of Mayom County following a grassroots disarmament campaign that stemmed from a recent peace conference.

The initiative, driven by 11 traditional chiefs in collaboration with payam administrators, youth leaders, and respected community figures, comes amid rising concern over inter-communal clashes and the widespread possession of illegal weapons among young people.

The peace conference, convened in July under the directive of Unity State Governor Riek Bim Top, laid out a clear framework for voluntary disarmament and reconciliation in the county.

Unity State Information Minister Gatwech Biphal confirmed the development on Friday, noting the cooperation shown by communities.

“Sequent to the recent peace conference that resolved on peaceful disarmament, the Payam administrators, traditional chiefs, and other influential groups of the community committed to the resolutions of the conference. This has resulted in a collection of at least 100-plus firearms in two weeks’ time,” Biphal said.

Governor Bim, who personally attended the handover ceremony on Thursday in Mankien, commended the role played by traditional leaders and the community at large in advancing peace.

Biphal acknowledged challenges in sustaining the momentum, citing the rainy season and poor road access as factors slowing down the collection process. Nevertheless, he emphasized that the campaign will continue across Mayom County in the coming weeks.

Community chiefs and leaders reaffirmed their commitment to achieving full disarmament, in line with resolutions adopted at last month’s peace dialogue.

The handover of weapons marks a significant milestone in Unity State’s broader efforts to reduce armed violence and restore trust between citizens and local authorities. Leaders remain hopeful that sustained collaboration between government and grassroots actors will pave the way for lasting peace in the county.
