South Sudan’s President, Salva Kiir, on Thursday night dismissed the Deputy Minister of Information Jacob Maiju Korok, and appointed former Deputy of Minister of Defense as his replacement.
In presidential decrees announced on state-owned SSBC, Kiir revoked the appointments of several SPLM-IG officials: Benjamin Bol Mel as first deputy secretary-general, Santo Malek as secretary for political affairs and mobilization, Bol Makueng Yiel as secretary for external affairs, and Kuong Doadhier Gatluak as secretary for defense and security.
Kuong Doadhier Gatluak was subsequently appointed as the SPLM’s first deputy secretary-general, while Bol Makueng Yiel was reassigned as secretary for political affairs and mobilization.
President Kiir did not provide specific reasons for the changes, citing his powers under the Transitional Constitution.
This reshuffle follows a series of major changes on February 10, 2025, when Kiir sacked the SPLM Secretary-General, Peter Lam Both and replaced him with former Vice-President, Dr. James Wani Igga.
In the same decrees, Igga was replaced with Dr. Bol Mel as the new Vice President for the Economic Cluster, and Hussein Abdelbagi was relieved of his docket as Vice President for the Service Cluster, and Josephine Lagu was appointed as his successor.
