South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir reaffirmed his call for long-term peace between communities in the Ruweng Administrative Area (RAA) and Unity State.

Kiir made this appeal after receiving a briefing from Ruweng’s Chief Administrator Stefano Wieu Mialek on the current security situation in Ruweng, which was prompted by fresh security concerns sparked by intercommunal violence in the region.

He urged Mialek to step up initiatives to restore peace and stability in Ruweng and Unity State.

Early this month, Armed youth from Mayom County in Unity State overrun Abiemnom County of the Ruweng Administrative Area following clashes with the area’s armed youth over cattle raids.

The armed youth seized the town from the authorities, launching attacks that resulted in casualties and the displacement of locals.

However, according to Mialek, calm has since returned to Ruweng after the armed youth from Mayom withdrew from the Abiemnom headquarters.

He underlined his administration’s commitment to delivering services and stabilizing the neighborhood.

In a related development, President Kiir also received a comprehensive report by Justice Charles Abyei Jok, the Chief Administrator of the Abyei Special Administrative Area.

The report noted an important milestone in peace negotiations between the Twic and Ngok Dinka communities, which just signed a historic pact to end hostilities and embrace reconciliation.

The Chief Administrator also pointed out that Abyei is experiencing an increase in the number of refugees escaping the conflict in Sudan.
