On Monday, President Salva Kiir received a comprehensive report from the Chairperson of the National Election Commission, Prof. Abednego Akok, on the country’s preparedness for the upcoming general December elections in 2026.

Akok presented President Kiir a document outlining the electoral calendar, stating that the electoral commission has made tremendous progress in its readiness efforts.

He briefed Kiir that the NEC has also built functioning offices in six states and the Administrative Areas, with the other states to be completed soon.

The NEC chair applauded the United Nations Mission (UNMISS) for constructing some such offices and training electoral officials.

Kiir hailed the NEC chairman for his unwavering commitment to preparing the country for its democratic path as stipulated in the peace accord and national aspirations aimed at attaining long-lasting stability.

On March 7, 2025, Akok reiterated its commitment to meeting election timelines, stating that the elections are scheduled for December 2026 under the 2018 Revitalized Peace Agreement and its extensions.

Last year, in November 2024, the parties to the peace agreement unanimously agreed to extend the transition period to 2026, with national elections slated for December 2026.

However, the country faces significant challenges, with recent clashes between the White Army and the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) in Upper Nile State’s Nassir and Ulang counties jeopardizing the peace process.
