South Sudan’s President, Salva Kiir, officially swore in Dr. Riek Gai as the new Governor of Jonglei State during a swearing-in ceremony at the presidential Palace on Monday.

The event also featured Nyuol Justin Yaac’s swearing-in as Chairperson of the Human Rights Commission, with Ezekia Alfandi Gibson serving as his deputy.

President Kiir urged Dr. Gai to tackle pressing issues in Jonglei State, emphasizing the need for stability in the region.

He reassured the new governor of his administration’s full support in addressing the ongoing challenges.

On his part, Dr. Gai reaffirmed his commitment to working collaboratively with all segments of society in Jonglei to confront the numerous obstacles the state faces.

However, officials urged governor Gai to intensify efforts toward establishing peace, stability, and unity in this volatile area.

Dr. Gai, a former Health Minister and member of South Sudan’s ruling party, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), was appointed governor of Jonglei State on March 7, 2025, replacing his SSOA counterpart, Majuob Biel Turk, in a move that experts considered a violation of R-R-ARCSS.
