President Salva Kiir has directed the newly appointed Chief of the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF), Gen. Dau Aturjong Nyuol, to implement an ambitious reform agenda aimed at transforming the national army into a professional and accountable army.
Speaking at a swearing-in ceremony at the State House on Thursday, Kiir emphasized the urgent need to revamp the army’s structure, beginning with the immediate removal of non-existent soldiers, also known as “ghost names,” from the military payroll.
He described the new role as one of immense responsibility and expressed confidence in Gen Dau’s leadership.
“This is a position of great responsibility, and I trust in your ability to serve with loyalty, discipline, and vision,” Kiir said.
Alongside payroll reform, the head of the state urged the army chief to prioritize securing consistent supplies of food and fuel, unifying the national army, strengthening military cooperation regionally and internationally, and fostering leadership development and discipline within the ranks.
On his part, Gen. Nyuol committed himself to the task, pledging to serve with “integrity, uphold the army’s constitutional role, and protect national sovereignty and citizens.”
Nyuol was appointed the army chief position on July 7, 2025, replacing Lt. Gen. Pual Nang in presidential decrees read on the state-owned SSBC.
The sweeping directives signal a renewed push by the government to build a credible and cohesive national defense force amid ongoing security challenges.
