A senior member of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), Hon. Joseph Bakosoro, has cautioned residents of Western Equatoria State against what he described as a growing and dangerous trend of frequently demanding or celebrating changes in state leadership.
Speaking on Wednesday at Yambio Freedom Square during the official reception of the newly appointed governor, Bakosoro emphasized that consistent and stable leadership is essential for sustaining peace, advancing development, and strengthening reconciliation efforts across the state.
He called on citizens, community leaders, church leaders, and members of the organized forces to cooperate fully with the new governor to ensure effective governance. Bakosoro also urged residents to refrain from sending what he termed as false allegations to Juba aimed at undermining state authorities. Instead, he encouraged resolving disagreements through dialogue and lawful processes within the state.
According to Bakosoro, the future of Western Equatoria depends heavily on stability and unity. He advised citizens to use constitutional channels when expressing dissatisfaction, rather than resorting to public pressure or emotional reactions that could heighten tensions.
“We should not keep spreading lies in the name of a governor just to have him removed. For how long will we continue changing governors this way? The responsibility is in our hands when we choose to make false accusations, it leads to leadership changes.”
He further encouraged residents to remain patient and actively participate in constructive political processes, including engaging government officials through dialogue, exercising oversight via local authorities, and working with civic organizations.
Western Equatoria State has witnessed periodic leadership changes and political tensions since South Sudan gained independence in 2011, with shifts in governorship often reflecting broader national political dynamics.
