Authority in Tombura County is urging for the immediate provision of makeshift shelters and farming tools as internally displaced persons (IDPs) begin returning to their homes following a period of relative peace in the region.
In 2024, Tombura County was ravaged by intense inter-communal violence, which forced almost the entire population to flee. Many sought refuge in various neighboring counties, while others found temporary shelter in IDP camps located at St. Mary Catholic Parish within Tombura town. The violence resulted in numerous civilian casualties, widespread looting, and the destruction of homes, leaving families with little to return to.
County Commissioner Mathew Mabenge spoke to King Media on Tuesday, explaining that following the redeployment of security forces in the area, the security situation has stabilized. However, he expressed deep concern about the enormous loss suffered by the local community, which must now start rebuilding from scratch.
“In terms of security, the situation seems to be calm, and I’m very happy the forces are protecting my people and they are now for bush clearance, most of them are clearing the bushes waiting for the rainy session. But only about the current situation we would like to ask the humanitarian at least to assist with some tools and plastic sheets like something like that. most of them are requesting plastic sheet at least to make shelter at their places but where to get is the problem”. As the rainy season approaches, the county is also facing another pressing need – agricultural tools. Many of the displaced individuals are now preparing their land for cultivation, but they lack the necessary farming equipment to restart their livelihoods.
Despite the challenges, Mabenge expressed optimism about the improving security situation, which has allowed children to return to school and public offices to resume operations. He praised the role of security forces in protecting the community and facilitating the process of recovery.
The return of IDPs to Tombura is a positive sign of recovery for the region, but with the destruction of homes and the need for essential farming tools, the county remains in need of urgent humanitarian assistance to ensure that its people can rebuild their lives.
