Early this week, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of South Sudan, Ramadan Mohammed Abdallah Goc, met with UN Special Representative Nicholas Haysom to discuss boosting business cooperation and strengthening the local business community. Minister Goc expressed gratitude for the UN’s continued support in fostering institutional development, underscoring the importance of collaboration in enhancing South Sudan’s business environment.

We encourage you to continue your vital role in building our institutions and fostering a vibrant private sector in South Sudan,” he stated.

Goc stressed the need to equip political parties, women, and youth with essential skills ahead of the upcoming elections, urging the UN Special Representative to support capacity-building initiatives for these groups. He also emphasized the importance of increasing job opportunities for South Sudanese nationals within the UN system.

Our people deserve a chance to contribute to and benefit from the UN’s work in our country,” he asserted, calling for a more inclusive approach to employment within international organizations.

UN Special Representative Haysom welcomed the opportunity for collaboration between UNMISS and the local business community, expressing the UN’s commitment to helping integrate South Sudanese entrepreneurs into formal economic activities.

There is an urgent need to support Juba’s business community, enabling them to compete effectively in the global market,” he said.

Haysom emphasized UNMISS’s commitment to fostering an environment where South Sudanese businesses can prosper. He acknowledged the progress made in the country but highlighted the need for ongoing cooperation, especially as the elections approach.

Successful elections require significant funding and support for the Electoral Commission to operate effectively in the States and the three administrative areas,” he noted.

This meeting reflects a shared commitment to fostering a sustainable economic environment and preparing the South Sudanese community for future political and social challenges. As both parties move forward, their collaboration is expected to lay the groundwork for a more resilient and prosperous South Sudan.
