The Western Equatoria State government, in collaboration with UNESCO, has launched the rehabilitation of Yambio FM, the state-owned radio station, to enhance public access to information ahead of the 2026 general elections.

A technical team from UNESCO’s Communication and Information Sector is currently renovating the station’s facilities and preparing for the installation of modern broadcasting equipment. The upgrades are expected to significantly improve the quality and reach of radio services across the state.

Paul Night, team leader from UNESCO, confirmed that renovation works are nearing completion, with only final touches remaining before the installation of broadcasting equipment begins. He noted that essential materials including solar power systems, ICT equipment, studio furniture, and broadcasting tools will be delivered in phases.

“We are working on two studios, and the team handling the studio setup arrived over the weekend. Work has already started, and by the end of this week, the studio work should be completed,” Night said.

Once installation is finalized, Yambio FM is expected to become fully operational within three months.

UNESCO says the project forms part of a broader initiative to strengthen public media in South Sudan, particularly to ensure communities in remote areas have access to reliable and timely information. The effort is also aimed at supporting peace building, civic engagement, and informed decision-making ahead of the elections.

Western Equatoria State Governor Daniel Badagbu Rimbasa has welcomed the initiative, urging residents to rely on the radio as a credible source of information during the electoral period.

Speaking during the ongoing works in Yambio, the governor emphasized the importance of radio in reaching rural communities and fostering unity.

“Radio is a unifying factor. I am pleased to see Yambio FM being upgraded with modern technology, including solar systems, computers, and improved infrastructure, as well as capacity building for its staff,” he said.

Governor Rimbasa added that the revitalized station will play a key role in promoting peace, civic education, transparency, and community engagement during the upcoming elections.
