Calm has returned to parts of Unity State following clashes between the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) and the Sudan People’s Liberation Army in Opposition (SPLA-IO) in Bentiu town and surrounding areas, authorities said.
The fighting broke out late last week in Nyuel-nyuel, also known as Kubri Jamus, in northern Unity State, before escalating on Sunday to the Bentiu Protection of Civilians (PoC) site and the Tong garrison (Dingding), west of Rubkona County.
Heavy weapons and artillery were reportedly used, triggering panic among residents.
Following the clashes, Unity State government appealed for calm after SSPDF forces repelled SPLA-IO fighters from the affected areas.
Nyakenya Johannes, Unity State’s Information Minister, told King Media in an interview that the security situation has since stabilized, noting that no casualties have been reported.
“We urge all communities to reject rumors and false reports of conflict. Security forces are in control, and the peace and safety of our people come first. The fighting was intense, but no casualties have been reported,” Nyakenya said, calling on residents to return to their homes and resume normal activities.
Meanwhile, Kerbino Yai Pazale, Deputy SPLA-IO spokesperson in Unity Stat, said their forces had tactically withdrawn from the Tong garrison to avoid fighting in civilian areas.
“Yes, we have withdrawn from the Dingding military barracks and are heading to Garia,” Pazale stated.
“We did not want to fight among civilians, especially with serious flooding that has left people with nowhere to run,” he added.
The latest violence underlines lingering tensions in Unity State, where sporadic clashes between SSPDF and SPLA-IO have continued to threaten the fragile peace despite the 2018 revitalized peace agreement.
