Thousands of residents of Yei River County gathered on Tuesday to welcome the Vice President of the Republic of South Sudan, Prof. Dr. James Wani Igga, who visited the county as part of Governor Emmanuel Adil Anthony’s ongoing tour of Central Equatoria State.
The Vice President was received by Governor Emmanuel Adil Anthony, alongside national and state government officials, chiefs, local leaders, youth, women, church representatives and members of the SPLM. Thousands of residents lined the streets of Yei to welcome the delegation.
Addressing a large public rally in Yei, Vice President Wani Igga called for an end to hatred and tribalism, urging communities to embrace peace, unity and cooperation.
The Vice President said peace and unity remain essential for South Sudan’s development and appealed to citizens to reject divisions that could undermine stability and development.
The rally brought together community members around key issues including peace, security, unity and development.
Vice President Wani Igga also highlighted the establishment of the University of Yei as an important investment in the region’s future, crediting President Salva Kiir Mayardit with the institution.
Governor Emmanuel Adil Anthony, meanwhile, appealed to armed and community groups that have not yet joined the peace process to embrace dialogue and reconciliation.
“We don’t need conflict. We want free movement for our people,” Governor Adil said.
The Governor emphasized the importance of maintaining Yei as a safe and accessible town where citizens can move freely and pursue their livelihoods without fear.
The visit and public rally come amid continued efforts by the state and national governments to promote peace, security and social cohesion across Central Equatoria.
The leaders called on communities to work together and prioritize peaceful coexistence as the state continues to pursue development and stability.
