The King of the Azande Kingdom, Atoroba Rikito Peni, on Tuesday officially launched the new farming season in Western Equatoria State, unveiling mechanized farming equipment, including tractors donated by the People’s Republic of China.
The launch ceremony, held to mark the start of agricultural activities, is part of efforts to boost food production and strengthen food security in the state. The tractors were donated through the Chinese Embassy in South Sudan in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security.
Speaking during the event, King Atoroba urged communities to take full advantage of the equipment and actively engage in farming to improve livelihoods.
“These tractors are for the people of the kingdom, not for me personally. I encourage everyone to make good use of them to produce enough food for their families and for the country,” he said. “This is also a call for all of us to return to farming.”
Western Equatoria State Governor Daniel Badagbu welcomed the donation, describing it as a timely intervention to support agricultural production in the region. He called on residents to take ownership of the initiative and ensure the machinery is used effectively.
“Today marks the official launch of the farming season and the commissioning of tractors donated by the Government of the People’s Republic of China,” the governor said. “These machines are intended to strengthen food security across Western Equatoria.”
Religious leaders also attended the event, including the Catholic Bishop of Tombura-Yambio, Eduardo Hiiboro Kussala, who praised the initiative as an important step toward addressing hunger.

“Our land is fertile, and we must make good use of it,” the bishop said. “Farming is essential for sustaining our communities and improving our well-being.”
Agriculture remains a key pillar of the Azande Kingdom’s economy and culture. Each year, the kingdom marks the start of the farming season to mobilize communities to cultivate crops and improve household food security across the region.
