Relative calm has been restored in Ayod County, Jonglei State, after days of intense clashes between the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) and Sudan People’s Liberation Army-In-Opposition (SPLA-IO) backed by the white army, according to Maj. Gen. Tito Biel Wieh, commander of the SSPDF’s 10th Infantry Division.
Speaking to King Media on Thursday, Biel said the fighting has ceased and security forces are consolidating control and stabilizing affected areas after intense confrontation.
“Our forces stood firm and demonstrated resilience and were able to repel the SPLA-IO from Wau payam and the outskirts of Ayod. So, we have secured key Wau Payam from SPLA-IO and the white army,” Maj. Gen. Biel said.
The clashes erupted last week in Ayod, particularly around Wau Payam and neighboring bomas, amid broader tensions in Jonglei State between the SSPDF and the opposition army.
Biel added that the SSPDF’s improved intelligence and tactical planning were decisive in regaining control.
The division commander further commended cooperation between the military and local community leaders, saying joint efforts helped protect civilians and prevent further escalation.
He noted that sustained patrols and monitoring operations are underway to deter any renewed outbreaks of violence.
“Our soldiers not only defended their positions but also worked closely with community chiefs to safeguard civilians and prevent further escalation,” he stated, stressing that ongoing patrols will maintain security and prevent renewed clashes as they work to secure the area.
The SPLA‑IO has yet to comment on the recent clashes, leaving it unclear whether its forces were fully driven out of Ayod.
The lack of an official statement leaves uncertainty over whether the cessation of fighting signals a temporary lull or a more lasting withdrawal.
With Ayod now calmer, residents are cautiously returning to daily activities, though humanitarian groups warn that the broader security situation in Jonglei remains fragile and could flare again without sustained dialogue and peace-building efforts.
