A 34-year-old driver is in police custody in Yambio following a tragic road accident that claimed the life of a 10-year-old boy. This incident has reignited public concern over reckless driving and alcohol use on South Sudan’s roads.

Authorities say the fatal crash occurred along Pazuo Road on May 3, in what witnesses describe as a devastating collision that left the young victim with fatal injuries. The child reportedly died shortly after the incident.

The Director of Traffic Police in Western Equatoria State, Arkagelo Santto Ginana, confirmed that the driver was apprehended shortly after the accident and remains in custody as investigations continue.

“Preliminary findings indicate that the driver was traveling at a high speed and is suspected to have been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash,” Ginana said. “These factors are believed to have significantly contributed to the accident.”

The tragedy has highlighted the growing dangers posed by reckless driving behaviors, particularly in populated areas where pedestrian movement is high. Traffic police have strongly condemned the incident, emphasizing that speeding and drunk driving continue to pose serious threats to public safety.

Authorities are also appealing to motorists across Western Equatoria and beyond to exercise caution, adhere to speed limits, and avoid driving under the influence of alcohol.
