The Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, held talks with Sudanese Prime Minister Kamil Idris in Khartoum on Thursday on advancing Sudan’s path to peace, stability and recovery.
Dr. Gebeyehu, who travelled to Khartoum on a peace mission earlier this morning, held discussions with Prime Minister Idris on ongoing efforts to restore peace and support Sudan’s recovery amid the country’s prolonged crisis.
Gebeyehu reaffirmed IGAD’s unwavering commitment to sustained engagement with the Government and people of Sudan, stressing that the regional bloc remains dedicated to supporting initiatives that promote lasting peace, stability and recovery.
The meeting comes as Sudan continues to grapple with a devastating conflict that has displaced millions of people and triggered one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
IGAD has consistently called for dialogue and a peaceful resolution to the conflict while working with regional and international partners to support efforts aimed at restoring stability in the country.
However, despite repeated appeals for peace, the conflict has persisted, with both the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) continuing to fight across the country.
