South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir has commended Upper Nile State Governor James Koang Chuol for his efforts in restoring peace and stability in the area following a period of violent unrest.

This comes after Koang briefed Kiir on security and humanitarian issues at the State House in Juba on Tuesday.

Kiir hailed Koang’s leadership, which he described as “critical and timely” in de-escalating tensions in areas like Ulang and Nasir counties.

The two counties, previously engulfed in conflict, are now witnessing the return of displaced civilians, a key indicator of regained public trust and relative calm.

Governor Koang reported that humanitarian efforts, particularly the airdropping of relief food by the national government, have significantly improved the lives of residents grappling with food insecurity.

“The food airdrops have helped our people a lot. Many of those who had fled are coming back because of the improved circumstances,” he said.

He further highlighted an encouraging development, increasing harmony between local civilians and army personnel.

“People and soldiers are now living together in peace. This shows real progress,” Koang stated.

The head of the state, impressed by the positive turnaround, pledged continued government support to cement peace gains, improve food security, and accelerate development in Upper Nile.
