South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir on Thursday officially sworn in Bol Wek Agoth as the new Governor of Warrap State, in a renewed push to restore peace and stability in the region.
In his remarks at the swearing ceremony at the State House, President Kiir called on the people of Tonj and the broader Warrap community to embrace the new governor with open hearts and to join hands in rebuilding their state.
The head of the state’s appeal came barely after deadly battles between the Luanyjang and Janglou clans in Tonj East County, resulting in the killing of 62 people and 46 others injured.
On his part, Agoth vowed to focus on peacebuilding, strengthening law enforcement, and reviving effective local governance.
He also appealed to Warrap natives living in Juba to act as ambassadors of peace for their conflict-stricken homeland.
Agoth appointment is the latest move in the President’s larger strategy to restore long-term peace to Warrap, which includes the dismissal of Lt. Gen. Marial Abur on Wednesday night in an area plagued by violence and instability.
