King News 10th September – At least 227 goats and sheep on Sunday night died after suffocation at the keeping center in Northern Bahr el Ghazal state.

Kerbino Thiep Tong, the State Minister of Animal Resources & Fisheries, said out of 342 animals kept in the selling center, two hundred twenty-seven sheep and goats died due to lack of oxygen.

“They put a lot of sheep and goats in a single keeping center, which is covered by a plastic sheet, and the heat was too much yesterday in Aweil town,” Tong clarified.

“Team from the ministry did their testing and found no sickness among the dead animals. However, the issue was due to lack of ventilators, an oxygen problem leading to death of these animals,” he added.

He ascertained that his team at the Ministry of Animal Resources would leave no stone unturned to dig deeper, although initial investigation shows no sickness-related death among animals.

“I want to call residents at this place don’t attempt to eat this goat meat because of the worry diseases that might affect human health while eating meat,” Minister revealed

Mr. Tong attributed the deaths of sheep and goats to human error, specifically the failure to consider ventilators at the keeping centers. He emphasized the importance of proper ventilation to prevent further fatalities.

In addition, Minister Tong warned the public against consuming the meat of dead animals. He advised that dead animals should be buried to reduce contamination risk and protect public health.

Echoing similar concerns, the Executive Director of Aweil City Council, Deng Akol, pointed out that air complications also caused the deaths of goats at the selling center in Aweil Town due to inadequate ventilation at the facility.

He stated that the city council will soon implement significant measures to ensure that animal centers are properly ventilated, creating a safe haven for animals intended for commercial purposes.
