President Salva Kiir on Friday received a comprehensive report on the ongoing Judicial Service Reforms, which aim to improve access to justice for all South Sudanese citizens.
The reforms, which align with the broader objectives of the 2018 Revitalized Peace Agreement, reflect the government’s commitment to transforming an often-fragmented judicial system into an accessible and inclusive framework.
During a high-level meeting at State House in Juba, James Ogola, Chairperson of the Judicial Reform Committee, stressed the necessity of South Sudan’s rich cultural legacy in shaping the reforms.
He underlined that the legal system must reflect the different customs and traditions of the South Sudanese people.
This inclusive approach is intended to foster unity among various ethnic groups, serving as a unifying force in a nation that has faced divisions.
Reuben Madol, Minister of Justice, described the report as a “clear blueprint,” providing a practical and actionable framework for reform that directly echoes the aspirations of the South Sudanese populace. However, President Kiir reaffirmed his commitment to the successful implementation of the reforms, recognizing that they are essential not only for the advancement of justice but also for the stability of South Sudan.
The report outlined crucial issues for attention, such as the urgent need to increase the number of judges, improve infrastructure, and upgrade existing court buildings. Furthermore, the addition of current technology and legal materials, such as updated libraries, intends to increase public access to the justice system, empowering citizens to seek legal redress.
The meeting, attended by First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny and senior officials from the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, signals a unified approach among government leaders in realizing these reforms.
As South Sudan navigates a complicated sociopolitical landscape, the commitment to judicial reform is a critical step toward national reconciliation and long-term peace.
