Unity State’s government has launched an ambitious road construction programme to connect villages, payams, and counties to the state capital, Bentiu, in a bid to improve mobility, trade, and access to essential services.
Speaking to King Media on Wednesday, Unity State’s Director-General for Information, Dor Daffir Jam, said the initiative is part of Governor Dr. Joseph Manytuil’s efforts to improve infrastructure and strengthen connectivity across the state.
He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to constructing roads linking all counties and payams, adding that improved transport networks would help communities move goods and access services more easily.
“The plan of the government is to construct roads that connect all payams and counties with the state capital. This will help our people move freely and improve economic activities across Unity State,” Jam said.
He noted that the state government had already started with the construction of the vital 92-kilometre Mayom-Mankien-Ajakuach Road, which links neighboring Warrap State and the wider Bhar el Ghazal region.
“We have started with the road connecting Ajackuach of Warrap State with Mayom County, and after that we will continue with other counties. The government wants to ensure that no county remains isolated,” he added.
The Director General stated that the road projects were among Manytuil’s priorities as the state prepares for the 2026 general elections, noting that infrastructure development remains central to his administration’s agenda.
He underlined that better roads would support humanitarian operations, security coordination, and the delivery of government services to communities living far from Bentiu.
For years, Unity State has struggled with poor road infrastructure, with the rainy season and five consecutive years of flooding leaving many areas cut off by damaged and impassable roads.
Jam further noted that the government will continue working with partners and other stakeholders to expand the road network and create better links between communities.
The initiative, he said, is expected to drive long-term development by expanding transport links to rural areas and improving the movement of people, goods, and services across Unity State.
