Ruto calls for joint action to ‘silence the guns’ in Africa after meeting with AU envoy Kikwete

Kenya’s President William Samoei Ruto has called for collective action to secure lasting peace across Africa, urging leaders and stakeholders to work together to address instability on the continent.

Ruto made this appeal during a meeting in Nairobi on Thursday with former Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete, who also serves as the African Union’s High Representative for the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea.

In a statement, Ruto emphasized that sustainable peace will depend on cooperation, noting that lasting stability requires all actors to unite in efforts to silence conflict and promote security.

He pointed to progress made by South Sudan over the years, highlighting milestones achieved since the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement in 2005 and the country’s independence in 2011.

Despite ongoing challenges, Ruto said South Sudan has made significant strides, adding that Kenya and the wider region have consistently supported the country through both its achievements and setbacks.

“Since then, Kenya and the region have walked with the people of South Sudan in their triumphs and challenges,” he said.

The discussions in Nairobi focused on the situation in South Sudan, particularly ongoing efforts to stabilize the country and sustain peace initiatives.

Ruto reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to working with regional and international partners to advance stability, noting that coordinated efforts remain essential in addressing conflicts within the Horn of Africa.
