The Chinese Ambassador to South Sudan, Ma Qiang, has called on the South Sudanese youth to lead the future of China–South Sudan relations, pledging continued investment in education, cultural exchange, and people-to-people ties.

Speaking at a cultural exchange event at the University of Juba on Thursday, Qiang stressed the importance of youth in maintaining bilateral ties between China and South Sudan, noting that a nation prospers when its youth flourish.

“Young people will accomplish something significant in life if they integrate your dreams and ambitions into the cause of your country and your people. You are studying at South Sudan’s best university and should aspire to take the responsibility of nation-building, striving to achieve lasting peace, development, and prosperity at an early date. I hope you will diligently acquire knowledge and skills. Knowledge is a cornerstone of personal growth.”

He urged UoJ students to pursue their studies and take-up the baton of cross-cultural friendship.

Qiang further stated that amity between the peoples holds the key to sound state-to-state relations.

“During your studies, you should lay this cornerstone deep and strong. It is hoped you will cherish the valuable times at university, master genuine skills and strive to bring honor to your country and benefit your people. I hope you will become envoys of China-South Sudan friendship,” he stated.

Prof. Robert Mayom, UoJ’s Vice Chancellor, appealed to the Chinese government to grant scholarships to university students and commended China’s consistent support for the university.

Give us some scholarships for students to go and study green energy or solar energy. So as a Fourth World country, we can benefit from the most successful country in the world, and that is China. The only way to do it is for us to send scholars there. I really thank the young diplomats from the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China for gracing this important opportunity. It is a pleasure to have collaboration and discussion among the group,” he stressed.

China’s role in education and cultural development in South Sudan has been impressive since its inception in 2017, the China-aided Technical Cooperation Project on Education in South Sudan has benefited about 150,000 students and teachers.

The Chinese Embassy is now running a creative competition entitled Chinese Modernization in which top performing University of Juba students will be invited as grand prize winners to take a short-term trip to China.
