On Monday, President Salva Kiir met with Francis Marial, the Governor of Warrap State, to discuss the worsening security situation in the area, including escalating intercommunal violence and widespread cattle raiding.
During the meeting, Governor Marial stressed the need for rapid action to resolve the ongoing tensions, noting that the state government is well aware of the necessity for prompt action.
The incipient rise in violence has compounded the state’s challenges, particularly as it grapples with the dire humanitarian impacts of seasonal flooding, which has displaced thousands of residents and further strained already scarce resources.
Governor Marial reaffirmed the government’s commitment to community-driven initiatives, acknowledging that communication and cooperation are the best ways to establish lasting peace.
In order to quell disputes, he said, the initiatives are intended to promote communication between opposing groups, promoting cooperation and understanding.
Marial further underlined that the state authorities will act swiftly and decisively to put an end to the ongoing violence between communities.
