President Salva Kiir on Monday issued a stern warning to South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) generals, cautioning them against political interference or allegiance to political factions.
The warning came during the official handover ceremony at SSPDF General Headquarters in Bilpam, where newly appointed Chief of Defense Forces (CDF), Gen. Dau Aturjong, assumed office.
He emphasized that the loyalty of the armed forces must lie with the Constitution, not with individuals or political parties.
“The army must protect the state, not political interests. Any form of political interference or alignment within the army will not be tolerated,” Kiir cautioned.
Kiir framed the leadership transition as a chance to restore the SSPDF’s core values of professionalism, discipline, and national unity.
“The SSPDF is a symbol of our sovereignty, a shield of our independence, and a guardian of our national unity. The time has come to transform the SSPDF into a professional, unified, and modern army, one that is well trained, well equipped, and rooted in patriotism and discipline,” he stated.
He called for urgent reform in military administration, specifically the elimination of “ghost names” from the payroll, a chronic issue he said erodes the integrity and efficiency of the armed forces.
The head of the state further urged the new CDF to lead with integrity, impartiality, and commitment to reform, while reiterating his government’s full support for the modernization of the force.
On his part, Gen. Dau pledged to prioritize the welfare of troops and uphold institutional reforms.
Kiir’s warning is a reaffirmation of South Sudan’s commitment to a depoliticized and professional military force that is accountable to the flag rather than factions.
