The United Nations Commission on Human Rights in South Sudan has expressed deep sorrow following the passing of Nicholas “Fink” Haysom, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).
In a statement issued Friday, the Commission described Haysom as a dedicated advocate for justice, peace, and constitutional governance, whose work significantly shaped South Sudan’s ongoing journey toward stability.
Haysom played a pivotal role in key milestones of the country’s peace process, including contributions to the Comprehensive Peace Agreement and support for the implementation of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan. The Commission noted that his leadership brought clarity, strategic insight, and principled direction to complex political negotiations.
Describing him as an “indispensable partner,” the Commission highlighted Haysom’s consistent support for its mandate, particularly his emphasis on human rights, accountability, and amplifying the voices of victims in South Sudan’s transition. His engagement, the statement noted, enriched understanding of conflict dynamics and strengthened collaboration between UN bodies.
“A distinguished son of South Africa, his legacy was forged in a lifelong struggle against injustice and a belief in the power of law and dialogue,” the Commission said, adding that his tenure at UNMISS reflected a deep commitment to inclusive and sustainable peace.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Haysom was remembered for his humility, generosity, and humanity qualities that inspired colleagues across the United Nations and beyond.
The Commission extended its condolences to his family, loved ones, and colleagues, noting that his legacy would continue to guide efforts toward peace, justice, and dignity in South Sudan.
Haysom’s contributions, the statement concluded, will endure through the institutions he strengthened, the ideas he advanced, and the many lives he influenced in the pursuit of a more just and peaceful future.
