Western Equatoria State Caretaker Governor Daniel Badagbu has declared a general amnesty for armed opposition groups still in the bush, urging them to return home, lay down their arms, and participate in the December elections without fear of prosecution.

Speaking to journalists on Monday shortly after arriving in Yambio, Governor Badagbu said peace, security, and political inclusion were essential to ensuring peaceful elections in the state.

“I am calling on all our brothers and sisters who are still in the bush to come out. There will be no prosecution. Come and participate in the election. This state belongs to all of us,” Badagbu said.

He emphasized that his primary responsibility as caretaker governor is to prepare Western Equatoria State for the December elections by creating a peaceful and inclusive political environment.

The governor did not identify specific opposition groups but said the amnesty was open to armed opposition members willing to surrender and participate in the political process.

He also warned county administrations against arresting opposition members who voluntarily surrender to local authorities, saying such actions could discourage others from abandoning armed activities and returning to civilian life.

Badagbu said his administration would work closely with security agencies, county commissioners, civil society organizations, and traditional leaders to ensure a conducive environment for voter registration, political campaigns, and Election Day.

His appeal comes as South Sudan prepares for the December elections, with peace, security, and the participation of all political actors remaining key concerns ahead of the polls.
