The Western Equatoria State Women’s Union has expressed concern over recurring road ambushes and abductions along highways, calling on the state government to strengthen security and protect civilians, particularly women and girls.

Flora Gume, acting chairlady of the Women’s Union in Western Equatoria State, raised the concern during a rally at Yambio Freedom Square on Monday, held to welcome Caretaker Governor Daniel Badagbu.

Gume was responding to the recent abduction of more than 20 passengers in Mundri East County. More than 10 women were reportedly among those abducted. The victims were later released after spending several days in the bush.

She said the continuing insecurity along major roads has left women and other civilians vulnerable, urging the caretaker government to take urgent measures to ensure safe travel and protect the population.

“Women are hurting deeply because the only road connecting Western Equatoria State to Juba has become a place where women are being abducted and stripped of their clothes. Women are extremely frustrated because such acts are not part of the culture and values of the people of Western Equatoria. If this road is closed today due to insecurity, how will women and their families survive?” Gume asked

Gume called for stronger security arrangements along highways to prevent further abductions and other attacks against passengers.

Meanwhile, Caretaker Governor Daniel Badagbu has declared a general amnesty for armed opposition groups still in the bush, urging them to return home and lay down their arms, without fear of prosecution.

Road ambushes, abductions, and looting have been reported along highways in Western Equatoria State, with armed men blamed for the incidents. The recurring attacks have raised concerns about civilian safety and the security of road transport across the state.
